Frivolous Friday! Balboa Park December Nights
It’s Frivolous Friday!
Thought I would share some of the fun I squeezed in this week (in between all my portrait sessions and retouching work.)
Yep, this happened #1:
Hubby and I had an amazing and festive time at Balboa Park’s December Nights celebration last weekend!
We were very excited to see Balboa Park’s crown jewel Botanical Building was open after it’s two year, $21 million renovation – and it is just stunning!
If you don’t know, Balboa Park’s December Nights is San Diego’s annual holiday event that started in the late 1970s and was once called Christmas on the Prado.
The event, celebrates the spirit of the holiday with family-friendly activities, light displays, musical performances, holiday dishes and more.
One must stop by and say “hey” to the Grinch….
– and we always make a point to stroll through some of the
museums – this year we visited the Art Museum and the Air & Space Museum.
The Art Museum was projecting The Nutcracker on the outside of their building! SO COOL!
We also enjoyed a Pipe Organ Concert (did you know it’s the WORLD’S LARGEST outdoor musical instrument??!)
Here’s a video clip – kudos to you if you recognize the song:
…and we ate our way through the International Cottages and the over 200 food trucks:
We shared Latkes from Israel, a Cannoli From Italy, a burrito from Mexico and a Bulgogi bowl from Korea …
…also enjoyed the free milk and cookies that Holland Dairy was giving out…
and we bought a kettle corn to take home…..YUM
We also enjoyed all the amazing lights and decorations in the park…
Even Balboa Park’s oldest tree was decorated for the season!
Fun fact:
Our Moreton Bay Fig tree (next to the Natural History Museum) was planted in preparation for the 1915 exposition.
The 1914 planting list for the exposition shows a five-gallon fig tree planted at this location.
This tree is listed in the California Registry of Big Trees as one of the champion trees of the state.
And who can resist a choo choo train? Especially one so festive!
What can I say: I’m Feeling Blessed!
