Frivolous Friday! Avoid Extinction: Choose Gratitude
Did you know that being thankful can actually make you happier?
Seriously, I’m not kidding you~! 🙂
Turns out “Gratitude is good medicine!”
Our brains focus on negative information as a way to remember pain so we can avoid it in the future and stay safe (think Cavemen) — this is called “negativity bias.”
To balance out this natural tendency, we need to consciously practice gratitude.
I’m reading some books and I enjoyed an online class on this and find this so interesting!
There are tons of scientific studies that have proven that by taking time to experience gratitude you will be happier and even healthier.
So in an effort to avoid extinction, I want to stop the world and mention that I’m feeling SOOOOO grateful!
As a visual person, I so appreciate beauty in every day experiences – from the smile of a friend to the flowers growing all around us!
I’m thankful that my family and I are healthy…
….and I’m all for some exercise and eating right to help guarantee this is true for a long timer…
[Sidenote: T-Rex’s can’t do Down Dog…cuz it hurts their little noses….just sayin’]
I love to have FUN! I’m always on the lookout for something fun to do next!
(This is often celebrated by my friends and eye-rolled by my husband!)
Sometimes it’s fun and games in the backyard… a.k.a. Forced Family Fun 😛
I’m super thankful for all my friends – we always have so much fun and they help me stay sane.
My kitchen is fully stocked and we are thankful for that abundance!
From sweet treats to yummy veggies – we are enjoying it all!
(Possibly enjoying the desserts just a wee bit more than the healthy stuff but you know what I mean…)
I’m so thankful that Social Media gives me an easy way to stay connected to my friends, family and community –
relationships are so important to me and greatly contribute to making me SOOOOO happy!
I’ve always loved to cook and bake…
(I just wish baked goods didn’t have so many calories or I’d be whipping up sweet treats and bread every day!)
I’m thankful for my garden and the birds and the bees!
I love spending time in the backyard enjoying all that Mother Nature shares with us!
Photography is my hobby as well as my profession, so I literally HAVE TO HAVE a camera in my hand and I’m so thankful for this!
**I kid you not, I was reading a fellow photographer’s instagram post the other day and she mentioned that she hadn’t picked up her camera in six weeks and I almost fainted.
I literally CAN. NOT. EVEN. IMAGINE. THAT. (I think it would be like someone telling me to stop breathing – I have a desperate need to capture the beauty and fun that I see all around me!)
And as much as chores can get tedious, I am thankful for the opportunity to serve my family and my community!
(And by serving my community, no, I don’t mean I’ll do your laundry….hee hee…) 😛
And lastly, I’m super thankful for all of you who support me on social media, in person and via my business – you have all given me the most perfect life!
If you want info on Happiness Class I enjoyed, just let me know. Here’s a quick summary of 6 ways to easily cultivate gratitude and thereby avoid extinction:

- Keep a gratitude journal. I’m doing my “journal” with photos and a caption because that’s how I roll, but you can make yours any way you want. Just make it a habit to note or share with a loved one thoughts about the gifts you’ve received each day.
- Write a thank-you note. You can make yourself happier and nurture your relationship with another person by writing a thank-you letter expressing your enjoyment and appreciation of that person’s impact on your life.
- Thank someone mentally. No time to write? It may help just to think about someone who has done something nice for you, and mentally thank the individual
- Count your blessings. Pick a time every week to sit down and write about your blessings — reflecting on what went right or what you are grateful for.
- Pray. People who are religious can use prayer to cultivate gratitude.
- Meditate. Mindfulness meditation involves focusing on the present moment without judgment.
