Frivolous Friday! VIP Fun at the Zoo
It’s Frivolous Friday!
Thought I would share some of the fun I squeezed in this week (in between all my portrait sessions and retouching work.)
Yep, this happened #1:
We left the house before sunrise last Saturday to head to the zoo! And we scored because the sunrise was AMAZING!
I made two different portraits to capture the sunrise – which do you like best?
(And as a PSA: this is from the passenger side – hubby was driving!)
Or do you like this full sized view sunrise?
I will mention it was a chilly 52 degrees when we arrived….brrrrr….I was bundled up! (Complete with hat, winter jacket, gloves and handwarmers!)
But let me back up: my excitement started a few weeks ago when we got a postcard in the mail inviting us to a private
and FREE “Morning With The Champions” event before the zoo opened.
————————————-
“We’re thrilled to have you join us for a morning filled with exploration and conservation at the San Diego Zoo.
This private event is exclusive for our Wildlife Champion members.
You and your guest will have the opportunity to stroll Zoo grounds and hear from various Wildlife Experts
as they share behind-the-scenes insights,
as well as stories of the incredible conservation efforts you make possible here in San Diego, and across the globe.
Event Itinerary:
6:45am: Check-in opens on Front Plaza
7:30am: Event begins
7:30-9:00am: Wildlife Expert Talks throughout Zoo
There were lots of different Animal Talks going on through out the zoo.
We chose to start our morning listening to the keeper talk about the giraffes –
she introduced us to “her herd” and shared what they love, don’t like and their histories – so interesting!
The koalas were still snoozing so we tip-toed by them….shhhh…
The zookeepers were definitely AWAKE and working hard!
Our next keeper talk was about the primates….
Then we jumped on the sky ride for our last Wildlife Chat…
The polar bears!
The polar bears had a collection of egrets and a heron sharing in the food….pretty brave if you ask me…
This is definitely my favorite image that I made that morning – don’t you just love the fog with sunlight streaming through? Apparently, if you are a polar bear, the perfect breakfast is beef shank chained to the wall….ewwww!
Oh. And I found where they are hiding the flamingos (to protect them from Avian Flu.)
The flamingos that used to be at the front gate are now in a completely protected enclosure down the hill from the hippo exhibit-looking healthy and happy!
And one thing we definitely weren’t expecting as part of our fun VIP morning was to each be given a $15 gift card for food, drink or merchandise – wow!
So we enjoyed a super yummy breakfast (which was so delicious I forgot to take a photo of it…oopsies….)
We’ve been members of the zoo every year since we moved here 23 years ago and as far as I’m concerned we will ALWAYS be a member!
I’m so thankful for a fun morning courtesy of the Zoo’s Wildlife Alliance and I’m thankful for all they are doing to help in the worldwide conservation effort!
