Frivolous Friday! Checkin’ out the new Children’s Zoo

It’s Frivolous Friday!

Thought I would share some of the fun I squeezed in this week (in between all my portrait sessions and retouching work.)

Yep, this happened #1:

Finally had time to check out the new Children’s Zoo and as expected, it is AMAZING!   So playful, interactive and fun!

The children’s zoo’s amazing goal is to to encourage kids to learn about nature, actively play, encounter new species, and develop an empathy for wildlife.

And in my mind, it does all that and more.

One of the super fun things that runs throughout the entire space is a water feature for kids to enjoy.

One tip – visit this early because I imagine it will be super crowded in the afternoons and bring a dry change of clothes and a little towel.

(And parents grab a coffee because you can just relax and let the kiddos play!)

And if you don’t want to play in the water, there are lots of things to climb on

(And YES, I did some climbing of my own because adults (I mean BIG KIDS) are allowed!

Yep – I climbed the tube!

The Children’s zoo represents different habitats from around the world, from desert dunes and wild woods to marsh meadows and rainforest.

The Cool Critters Reptile House is beautiful as well as interesting….

And the two story high Spineless Marvels Invertebrate House represents a
greenhouse with butterflies, grasshoppers, bees, and other invertebrates.

Kids get to explore dark caves, check out amazing creatures, inspect an entire colony of leafcutter ants and see a bee hive in action.

And they have monkeys and prairie dogs and lots of other amazing things! I mean how many times can you say “Awww…” in one morning?  The answer is A LOT!

Yep, this happened #2:

We also strolled around the zoo and I made this portrait that I have to tell you about.  First of all, can I just say it bugs me when someone thinks good photography is instantaneous if they buy a camera that looks sophisticated –

there are years and years of education and skill behind making a good photographer.

This is a perfect example – I noticed this Egret perched above the hippo pool and I realized I could MAKE an amazing portrait (yes MAKE not TAKE.)

Here’s the image from before – keep scrolling to see the image I MADE.

I realized that by changing my settings, metering on the egret itself, rather than the entire scene, and zooming in to eliminate clutter I could create this image of the same egret IN CAMERA WITH NO PHOTOSHOP

Okay, climbing down off my soap box – the Komodo dragons are always magnificent – this sweet little lady was wandering all around.

And I couldn’t resist this little candid capture of grandpa and grandson planning their route…seriously, doesn’t it make you smile???

And seriously, don’t you think this colobus monkey’s fur looks fantastic?  Like he just walked out of a high priced salon???  Ha!

And the freeloading ducks were in every enclosure – couldn’t resist this sweet little capture!

Yep, this happened #3:

We picnicked at the zoo –  of course you can’t bring an ice chest or picnic basket into the park, you are allowed to bring your lunch.

My favorite lunch on the go is P B & J (peanut butter is HIGH on my yummy list!) and baby carrots add just the perfect crunch to lunch! (omg I am a poet!)

And here’s a tip for you –  invest in a San Diego Zoo souvenir plastic cup, then bring it back every time you visit for $1.99 refills of cold and icy diet coke.  So you save the earth by reusing your cup and SCORE a great deal!

What can I say:  I’m Feeling Blessed!
