Frivolous Friday! All the Colors of Dia De Los Muertos

It’s Frivolous Friday!

Thought I would share some of the fun I squeezed in this week (in between all my portrait sessions and retouching work.)

Yep, this happened #1:

Made some spooky friends this week!

Of course I had to make my annual pilgrimage to Old Town to check out their Day of the Dead displays – always colorful, sweet and fun.

If you’ve never been, mark your calendar, grab your friend and go!!!

You might already know that Dia de los Muertos is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd (All Soul’s & All Saint’s Day) in honor of deceased loved ones.

It’s believed that the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31 and the spirits of all deceased children (angelitos) are allowed to reunite with their families for 24 hours.

On November 2, the spirits of the adults come down to enjoy the festivities that are prepared for them.

Dressing as a skeleton makes it friendlier for spirits.

Old Town has lots of fun activities, shrines and decor to help make the holiday come to life….pardon the pun.

But this gal was ooo-la-LAAA with her orange marigolds!

Why Marigolds For Dia De Los Muertos?
Marigolds guide the spirits to their altars using their vibrant colors and pungent scent.

(Also, marigolds, or flowers in general, also represent the fragility of life.)

The souls of the dead also return each year to eat, drink and be merry…just like they did when they were living….

so families welcome the dead by preparing special foods in honor of those who have departed.

Their special foods are placed on altars along with food such as pan de muertos baked usually in the shapes of skulls.

Yep, this happened #2:

If you are in Old Town you must.  Must.  Stay for lunch.
So I did.
Cafe Coyote is always one of my favorite places and their patio was just perfect!

I  couldn’t resist ordering two ala carte tacos…..
and somehow half a basket of warm tortilla chips also disappeared,
and a whole bunch o’ salsa,
and two diet cokes (cuz hanging around with skeletons made me parched.)

What can I say:  I’m Feeling Blessed!
