We’re ENGAGED! When should we schedule our engagement portrait session? Tips from a professional photographer

Congrats on your engagement!

there are tons of things on your to do list and life is crazy, but make sure you take time to schedule your engagement portrait session…..

(BTW:  Bikes and balloon Engagement Session on the beach – more fun HERE)

I believe your engagement session is Chapter 1 of your love story – where your story started, and is your time to really reflect the true YOU!
AND
It’s also the only time to get to know your wedding photographer
(That way you’re already friends before wedding day!)
AND
you have a chance to see your photographer’s work while there’s still time to hire someone else
— there are no do-overs on wedding day so a test run is a great thing!

So today I thought I would share a bit of advice on how to make sure we capture the engagement portraits of your dreams!

Here are some things to consider when picking the best time

to schedule your engagement session:

How will you use your engagement photos?

Will you need your engagement photos for your wedding website?

Or for your Save the Date cards ?

Or are you thinking they will be a personal memento to help remember this amazing time in the life of you and your fiance?

If you plan to send Save the Date cards with your engagement portraits
I suggest you schedule your session as early as possible so guests can SAVE THE DATE.
Schedule your session at least a month before you want to mail them.
If your engagement portraits will be just for your own use,
you could take them at any time between getting engaged and saying ‘I DO!’

Consider the season

When scheduling your engagement session,  keep the climate in mind!

Are you a summer girl and love all things barefoot and bright?

Or maybe you want a winter snow themed session…. or perhaps Christmas is your favorite time of year???

Or maybe walking through colorful autumn leaves in a forest is just what you’ve dreamed of?
Or maybe the season doesn’t really matter because you want to revisit a special place?

Katie and Blake recreated their First Date for their Engagement Portrait Session
…….the same movie theatre and the same walk on the beach afterwards……

Movies, popcorn and the beach?  Oh my!
Or maybe a picnic in the park with your favorite board game will tell your story best???

Consider incorporating the theme of your wedding into your engagement session-
rustic cowboy boots anyone?
Or maybe your favorite city should be the backdrop?
When getting ready to schedule your engagement session, consider how busy your photographer might be….
I generally book portrait sessions two months in advance –
so schedule your engagement session early!

Or maybe we should meet at a place where you first fell in love — like Disneyland?

How about some formal engagement portraits and then have some FUN at the end?
