Frivolous Friday: Raindrops on Roses and….

It’s Frivolous Friday!

Thought I would share some of the fun I squeezed in this week (in between all my portrait sessions and retouching work.)

Yep, this happened #1:

Noticed we had weather this week.  A lot of it.

And I loved seeing Raindrops on Roses…..

And make sure you keep reading, I have a tutorial on how to photograph raindrops later in this post.

and can I just say the clouds were just stunning all week long – I captured hundreds of beautiful scenes during my walks this week

And YEP I kept to my walking 5 miles a day – just did it in between cloud bursts!

Sometimes the clouds were dark and dramatic….

And sometimes the sky was filled with not rain, but color

And I spotted a beautiful rainbow!

And about 5 minutes after I made this rainbow portrait it started to pour….and guess what?  I didn’t melt walking home in the rain!  GASP!

It wasn’t all sparkle and glory though….

Most of all, I just loved seeing the sparkle that the rain gave everything…

I even saw sparkle on someone’s car bumper… #selfie!   🙂

This scene reminded me a little of a painting by Monet –  I captured this in the rain while looking down from the bridge to our little creek.

Speaking of the creek – it was rushing and spectacular!

Thought I would put together a little tutorial for Raindrop Reflection photography:

1. Find rain. (Talk to Mother Nature or create your own with a spray bottle of water.) Spray liberally, so water will pile up in certain places to form large drops.

2. Now pick a rain drop to photograph! If you want it to reflect something you need to able to see through the drop.

3. Some people like to use a tripod for macro photography. I don’t – I like to hand hold so I have lots of flexibility.

To counter the wind and the blur it causes, I set my camera on high speed burst and then just fire away.

4. Manual focus is what I prefer. If you set it to Auto Focus, the camera generally will focus on the background not on your little drop of rain. Focus on the center of the drop.

7. Adjust the camera settings. I shoot with my aperture wide open (f/2.8) to give me a nice blurry background and usually have an ISO of around 100-400 (400 if there is even a slight breeze so I can have faster shutter speed.)

So go give it a try and let me know what you think!

And I couldn’t resist taking a little drive to see the snow on the local mountains – this was captured from near Mt. Woodson looking east.

“Thars snow in them there hills!” 😛

Yep, this happened #2:

I love a cozy Sunday morning with the hubs, the newspaper and a hot cup of coffee – and it was even extra cozy because of the rain.

Usually I make a big breakfast for us, but this week we treated ourselves to a little box of Krispy Kremes.

(Maybe not my favorite donut, but I’m all about a drive-thru right now – we haven’t been inside any store for months!)

Out of curiosity, what section of the newspaper do you grab first?  I ALWAYS dive for the ‘Arts and Culture’ and I think the Union Tribune has been doing a great job with that section during covid – really delving into the Arts that can still happen!

And I wholeheartedly support this week’s article on combating stress by practicing gratitude!

I keep a daily gratitude journal and it has brought me so much happiness and peace!

(Side note, I keep my journal online so I can add photos – you know my love language is photos!

Let me know if you want to know my favorite online journal app – and there are so many beautiful print journals too.

Do you keep a journal?  What are your thoughts on it??
