How to teach photography to your kids and advice on how to enter the PTA Reflections Art Contest

Hope you enjoy this little photography lesson specifically to help kids get excited about photography

and help them enter the PTA Reflections Photography contest.

If your children haven’t had much interaction with a camera or cell phone camera – you might want to start with a little informal photography time with just you and your kiddo.

Start with a walk together and challenge your kiddo to find something to photograph.

Let them capture a photo of it and then you snap a photo of the same thing – from a different angle.

Talk about how the photos are different and the same.  Then look for new things to photograph~!!!

The most important thing to keep in mind when going out to take pictures with your child?

Allow them to lead, foster a spirit of curiosity, and have fun!

And after you’ve built up their skills and hopefully a passion for such a wonderful hobby – you can challenge them to think about how to Pre-PLAN a photo….

Brainstorm how they will plan a photo for this year’s Reflections Contest

The Theme is:

“I Matter Because”

After they have some ideas –  then consider how to illustrate that as a “story” that you can photograph.

After you have your story plan, start taking photos!

Photography is a fun, lifelong hobby – so don’t think of this as a one time thing for your contest entry.

Here are some fun activities to do together with your children behind the lens any day:

*Find and capture a favorite color

*Snap silly selfies

*Go on a photo scavenger hunt

*Make a photo art journal

*Print and display their photos

Just keep photographing!
