Frivolous Friday: A Duck Rescue During a 120 Degree “Vacation”

It’s Frivolous Friday!

Thought I would share some of the fun I squeezed in this week (in between all my portrait sessions and retouching work.)

Yep, this happened #1:

I went to the desert in the heat of summer!  Yikes! and  Eek!

The backstory is I went to Palm Springs to check on my parents and spread a little bit of covid-proof cheer on my mom’s birthday.

And first let me back up and say that my family and I  are treating this virus VERY SERIOUSLY.     Like so seriously, we have barely left our house since March.  And I’m not kidding you one bit.

I’ve been cooking every meal at home AND having produce delivered (HERE in case you missed that fun story) and groceries delivered (HERE in case you want to catch up on that.)

Literally, I could count on my fingers the number of times I’ve started my car since March!

That said, I just really wanted to see my parents in person, bring them some groceries and do some technology ‘fixing’ for them.

So I left the poodles and the hubs and home and zipped to Palm Springs for a few days of a socially distanced, mask wearing visit.

And it was 120 degrees.  And if you don’t know what that is like, it’s like breathing in an oven only with sand mixed in.

It’s almost 90 degrees WHEN YOU WAKE UP and WHEN YOU GO TO SLEEP.  So you really just never get to be outside.

I didn’t let that stop me though – I got up at sunrise to get in my 5 mile walk….because I wasn’t going to miss that…. I don’t care how hot it is.

Is there anything better than the long lean shadows of morning sunlight?  I think not!    Wish I was this slim in real life!

I was rewarded with some amazing views and made a new friend – can you spot him?

Their community is so beautiful I barely noticed it was hot. Barely…. 😛

Also saw a mirage….not really but how fun is this?

Yep.  This happened #2

On that very same walk, I spotted this little duck sitting under the duck crossing sign and I thought it was so amusing I had to take a photo.

But…..

But….she wasn’t just resting:    she was injured and couldn’t walk or fly.  waaa!

So we rescued her from the street….

And took her about 10 miles away to the to The Wild Bird Sanctuary and let the team there (mostly volunteers) nurse her back to good health!

The Coachella Valley Wild Bird Center is a non-profit corporation created for the care and rehabilitation of orphaned injured or sick native wild birds,

with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into their habitats

They’ve treated birds ranging in size from hummingbirds to pelicans and eagles!  Here’s a few that we got to see.

I’m so thankful amazing places like this exist!   (San Diego has one too!  Project Wildlife)

Yep, this happened #3:

I brought some treats with me to the desert – one of which was a big ole batch of  Snicker Doodle Cookies.
(Don’t you just LOVE to say that?  “SNICKER DOODLES!”  love the way that rolls off the tongue…)

And the recipe is from my oldest cookbook!  Circa 1973!

Do you remember the scholastic book club?  Once a month your elementary school teacher would give out that blessed little brochure with all those amazing books in it?

(And remember how you wanted EVERYTHING, but mom never let you?  She’d say, “just pick one”)

WELL, that’s where I bought this cookbook WHEN I WAS IN FIFTH GRADE!

The first recipe I ever tried in it was SNICKER DOODLES.

My mom especially fell in love with them and we’ve been making them ever since!

**I always say you can tell a great recipe by how messy that cook book page is!

(This is a REALLY great recipe, I guess…)  🙂

So I whipped them up:

And baked them nice and golden…

Photobucket

Tested them and then wrapped them for my mom!

What can I say:  I’m Feeling Blessed!

And do you know what else I’m blessed by?     Capturing amazing moments for you to treasure for a lifetime!
