Frivolous Friday! The Vacation That Wasn’t, the FBI & Around the World Food

It’s Frivolous Friday!

Thought I would share some of the fun I squeezed in this week (in between all my portrait sessions and retouching work.)

Yep, this happened #1:

This week I was supposed to be in Europe.

Specifically,  today I would have been finishing my week in Germany and boarding a plane to Paris, then later this week would be zipping through the Chunnel on the way to London…doesn’t that sound like perfection?

The backstory is that my sister had to go to Germany on business so I was going to hook up with her and then introduce her to all my favorite places in Europe.

We’ve been planning this three week Sister European Escape for months and months!

Here’s what we should have looked like:

We both went through the ordeal of applying for Global Entry to make things easier and we gathered up our essentials (like passports and cash.)

**Side note about the FBI:

– the FBI might now have me under surveillance because I tried to open this photo in Photoshop so I could blur out my info on the Global Entry card.

Wanna know what happened??   Photoshop refused to open this photo and instead gave me an error message that said:

“The counterfeiting of currency is a crime….any reproduction of banknote image is illegal”

EEEK!  I wasn’t going to counterfeit the money!!     So I’m pretty sure I’m now on the FBI’s Most Wanted list!  😉

The trip has been in the back of my mind for months, so I’ve been doing some advanced planning.

Since our trip was going to be fast paced, fun and filled with adventure, I wanted to be super mobile so

I picked out a brand new suitcase – small, sleek, easy to maneuver, SUPER lightweight and PURPLE!!  (Can’t you just imagine how cute I’d look with this suitcase zipping around Ole Pair-eee?

As the official tour guide to our Grand European Adventure, I spent hours and hours researching, reading books, listening to podcasts, watching TV shows, scanning websites, etc and have about 20 pages of notes, plans, reservations, tours, museum addresses, etc –

(Can you tell I like to REALLY make plans before I go on vacation?   Well I do!    I don’t want to miss a single thing!)

To quote my sister “can you please plan every vacation we ever go on?”   😉

And side note, is anyone else absolutely addicted to Rick Steves?

Yep.  This happened #2

Then reality set in and of course I had to cancel the trip – we thankfully had Travel Insurance so we got most of our money back so that was good!

But instead of strolling through Paris with a crepe in my hand right now, I’m sitting at my boring old desk, in my boring old house being boring ole me.

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE!

As our Bon Voyage date approached I had an idea…..drum roll…. I decided to go on vacation anyway!   😛

First I changed my mode of travel.   I thought it would be best to travel by balloon so I wouldn’t have to worry about being exposed to Covid in an airplane….lots of FRESH AIR for sure this way!

A PRETEND VACATION is the next best thing to being there….right?

So now I get to celebrate because I don’t have to go through the ORDEAL of packing.

I will do a little happy dance because I didn’t have to SIT on an airplane for 13 hours and then do all that waiting in line at customs….

Here’s my plan:

First up:   get out my old vacation photos so I can still enjoy travel.

I thank my lucky stars that I have lots of photos to remember past trips so I can easily pretend I’m on vacation again.

Do you ever stop to just browse through old photos?

I do this all the time – from family portraits, to day to day photos, to vacation photos…..they ALL bring up pleasant memories!

My old vacation photos are helping me today get through the disappointment and help me remember the fun and history of the last time I was in Germany….

Old family photos help me remember my two vacations to enjoy the art , culture, beauty and fun of France…

And my old photos help recreate the color, vibrancy, history and fun of the last four trips we’ve made to London…

(London is my favorite city in the world BTW – except for San Diego of course!)

Yep.  This Happened #3

Well to further commemorate my trip that wasn’t,  I decided to EAT like I was on vacation….

so in honor of not visiting Nuremberg and Munich, Germany – I made some soft pretzels and ate them  over a map of Germany….nom nom nom

We ordered ‘take away’ fish and chips (did you know that ‘to go’ food is called ‘take away’ in London?) from our local British Pub, Phileas Fogg’s.

And I made French Creme Brulee for dessert.

So for one meal, we ate our way through Europe!

So instead of my grand European vacation, I’ll be reading a travel journal in my own tropical backyard resort….and

let me tell you this in summary –

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.

And my glass of lemonade is Half FULL   🙂

….and I hope yours is too!
