Frivolous Friday! Blasting to the Past: Chocolate chip cookies from 1953!
It’s Frivolous Friday!
Thought I would share some of the fun I squeezed in this week!
Yep, this happened:
I ate A LOT of cookies this week! EEK!
Here’s the end product but keep reading, there’s a story….
One rainy day last week I felt like baking some cookies, so I turned to this historic cookbook that once belonged to Mike’s mom —
it was published in the early 1950’s!
It’s a hoot to look through because of it’s “Susie Homemaker” vibe….
It had a recipe for Chocolate Chip Cookies – using shortening (which you don’t see very much anymore)
and also a lot less sugar than recipes of today.
(I made mine with butter because I wasn’t going to go to the store just for Crisco…lol)
So I did some mixin’ and scoopin’ (added a bit of sea salt because why not….)
And after a few minutes in the oven….wa LAAAAA!
Is there anything better than a chocolate chip cookie straight out of the oven?
Except for a chocolate chip cookie straight out of the oven WITH a glass of milk?
And I’m wondering if you are a dunker?
I’m generally not, but thought I would dunk for the photo opportunity of it (I’m obsessed with those three drips of milk in this photo!)
Turns out Dunking is also delish!
Three cheers for an “…ample cooky jar” (and that’s how they spelled cookie!)
And speaking of that ample cookie jar bringing back old-time peace….
Here’s Mike’s mom in the early 1960’s — maybe using this very cookbook!
And a Davis family portrait from a few years later – I’m guessing my hubby was about five years old????
Don’t you love how just looking at a photograph can bring up such wonderful memories?
Even if I wasn’t a family portrait photographer, I would tell you to make sure you take lots of photos of your family because
you are creating heirloom memories for later generations and a whole lotta wonderful memories for yourself!
[insert me stepping off my soap box!]
And here’s one more oldie for you — me and my mom cooking a Thanksgiving day feast!
I’d say maybe I was in my mid teens…? Clearly I’m baking a pie!
And lol there’s an open cookbook like the one pictured earlier and can of Crisco Shortening on the counter….and remember when phones had CORDS?
What can I say: I’m Feeling Blessed!
