Frivolous Friday: The Henna Artist, Lunch & Photo Albums
It’s Frivolous Friday!
Thought I would share some of the fun I squeezed in this week (in between all my portrait sessions and retouching work.)
Yep, this happened:
Checked off another item on my lifetime bucket list –
-I got a henna tattoo! Here’s the backstory — my book club was selected to read the book “The Henna Artist” BEFORE THE BOOK WAS RELEASED!
(how cool is that? The publisher mailed us a case of books in advance!)
So we read the book and when we got together to talk about it, our hostess Debbora arranged a surprise visit by a real henna artist!
(gasp!) So we each got to choose a hand design and went home with a pretty cool souvenir. My tattoo means happiness – and clearly it made me happy…lol.
In case you didn’t already know this, a henna tattoo is created just like decorating a cake. The artist uses a teeny little piping bag to pipe the paste onto your skin.
You leave it on your skin until it dries and flakes off – which takes about an hour.
After it flakes off, the tattoo is bright orange, and then the next day it turns a beautiful brown.
Sooooo cool, isn’t it? And our henna artist, Vaishalli, owner of Artz Appeal – was amazing! She was super fast and precise – and fun to talk to! And since our book club always includes a lunch themed to match the book, we enjoyed an amazing Indian meal – complete with homemade Kulfi Ice cream that was pistachio, cardamom and saffron flavored – it was delish!
Yep, this happened:
This week I finished a HUGE project that has been on my to do list for months…
Normally, I am a DO-ER — I’m very motivated and don’t mind working hard to achieve my goals.
But every now and then a BIG PROJECT comes along…..you know the kind of project with no deadline, that you know is going to take a LONG TIME and will probably be miserable, so you keep putting it off?
That kind of project.
Here’s how it ended up on my to do list to begin with:
I was watching a TV interview of someone who had just lost their house in a wildfire. That made me think about how terrible it would be to lose my home to fire – especially the irreplaceable photos.
(News flash: photos are important to me) 😛 😀
So then it occurred to me that I should photograph each page of every photo album we had – and keep it in the cloud. JUST. IN. CASE.
**Side note – I have been a LIFELONG photographer and scrapbooker!
All our family memories (and hours and hours of hard work scrapbooking) are in these albums!
(So even though a lot of the original photos were digital and ARE backed up in the cloud – the page designs and early photos were not.)
Well, I’ve been putting it off for months but earlier this week I gave myself a pep talk – something like “GIRL, GET ON IT”
and so this girl got on it! 😉
I set up a little studio to photograph each and every page of about 5 feet of albums!
It took me a couple days to just do the shooting. I’m not going to retouch/crop/etc – because I’m hoping I never need to use these photos but I’ll tell you – I feel better getting that done!
I ended up with about 1,500 photos of double page spreads…..I clicked through every album, Matt’s baby book, EVERYTHING! WHEW~!
And you know what? It actually turned out to be fun – I spent so many hours reminiscing over all the wonderful family memories….
like that walk on a volcano to see the lava….
And all those precious firsts and noteworthy accomplishments. And I can’t tell you how good it feels to know my photographic memories will always be there.
So now, I’m going to jump up on my soap box right now and say three things to you:
- 1. If your photos aren’t backed up on the cloud (even just the photos on your computer or your cell phone) DO IT!
- 2. If you haven’t been regularly capturing your family’s life – the regular days, the special days and all those in between with good quality photography – AND PRINTING THEM – you are missing out in getting to reminisce.
- 3. If you haven’t had family photos in a while – CALL ME – and I’ll help you capture some amazing memories (and I’ll back them up in the cloud for you!)
What can I say: I’m Feeling Blessed!
And do you know what else I’m blessed by? Capturing amazing moments for you to treasure for a lifetime!
