Frivolous Friday! There’s GOLD in them thar hills!

It’s Frivolous Friday!

Thought I would share some of the fun I squeezed in this week (in between all my portrait sessions and retouching work.)

Yep, this happened #1:

I am LOVING all the beautiful wildflowers on our hillsides right now, aren’t you?

The poppies are pretty much gone but the yellow mustard plants are going CRAZY!

Like 9 foot tall CRAZY!    (Can you see me?)

And in case you were wondering, here’s a little history lesson for you:

Mustard is not native to California – one accepted idea of how it got here is that Portola brought the seeds from Spain and planted them to mark his trail as he led his expedition north from Mexico in 1769 to found the missions in California.

Isn’t that a good story?

Indians ate the leaves raw or boiled them like spinach and pulverized the seeds in water to make a spicy paste.

Early Spaniards also used the greens in their salads.

Wild mustard greens can be eaten today too – they are highly nutritious and low in calories (about 32 per cup of cooked greens) but rich in vitamins A and C, calcium and iron….

but you won’t find me harvesting a salad in the park – I’ll just eat my Spring Mix thank you…lol

And in case you were wondering, the bright yellow table condiment mustard that we squirt on our sandwiches does indeed come from this plant’s seed!

(In addition to the leaves,  the flowers, seed pods and roots are also edible!)

Yep, this happened #2:

One of the reasons we’ve been hiking all over the county the past few weeks is we were trying to finish up the Crest to Coast trail challenge while the weather was still cool.

And we DID!  Woot!   HERE is a link if you want to try some of the hikes – most were pretty easy.

Yep. This happened #3

We stopped off at Everbowl in Poway to enjoy a little reward for finishing our last hike of the challenge.

If you’ve never been, I’d best describe it as a cross between a yogurt parfait and a thick smoothie.
You can completely customize your bowl, but we chose two from their Favorites Menu.

We tried: The  HAWAIIAN
ACAI, Blueberries, Bananas, Pineapple, Coconut Milk.
TOP: Granola, Kiwi, Pineapple, Coconut Honey/Agave.

ACAI, Blueberries, Bananas, Almond Milk.
TOP: Granola, Blueberries, Strawberries, Bananas, Grapes, Goji Berries,Honey/Agave.

Here’s their website and it’s near the Sprouts on Poway Road.
