Frivolous Friday! A Desert Adventure, One Million Butterflies and Better than your Boyfriend Brownies

It’s Frivolous Friday!

Thought I would share some of the fun I squeezed in this week (in between all my portrait sessions and retouching work.)

Yep, this happened #1:

Ventured out to Anza Borrego to see the desert wildflowers – and they were amazing!

Here’s a tip for you: stop first at the Visitor’s Center for a map with all the bloom areas then we know right where to go…they will give you a map leading to the amazing spots!

(And FYI the gardens around the Visitor’s Center are incredible just on their own!)

Here’s a map to the Anza Borrego Visitors’ Center

But we found lots of color everywhere….

This Specter phacelia flower was new to me this year-I love how it’s almost MORE beautiful from  the side – I’m dying over that little curl!

Does this look like a sad cartoon face to you….?

One of my favorite portraits from the trip – a Painted Lady Butterfly enjoying a field of lupine…

(She was about 15 feet away from me but that distance was no problem with my zoom lens!)

Yep. This happened #2

We were INUNDATED with Butterflies!  Like not kidding you:  we think we saw hundreds of thousands of them!

Painted Lady Butterflies were everywhere in the desert and on the mountain roads going to and from the desert — and I do mean EVERYWHERE – we saw thousands and THOUSANDS of them.

(I actually heard people were reporting them in Ramona and Escondido too!)

Here’s a little video so you can see them too  they overwinter in the deserts along the Mexican border, where they breed and lay their eggs on annual plants that grow quickly after the winter rains start.
Then hundreds of millions of adults fly from southeast to northwest through California.   They fly from dawn to dusk without stopping to feed.

And speaking of feeding……munch…munch

Yep, this happened #3:
Met a couple of fierce dinosaurs wanting to eat me….you know, the usual. 😉

And had a picnic!

And FINALLY it was time for lunch!
As is our tradition, we always bring a picnic lunch to enjoy during our desert adventure
(this is a tip I recommend for you too – the restaurants are few and far between and crowded so bring a lunch and eat on the grass in Christmas Circle!)
We each brought something to create an amazing meal, which of course I forgot to photograph because I was starving to death and that affected my brain so I never thought of it.
BUT before I left home I did style and photograph the brownies that I made for our desert in the dessert. 😉

(They are called “Better than your Boyfriend” brownies….and I think they were!  Recipe HERE if you want to give it a whirl)
