Frivolous Friday: A Flamingo Photobomb, a Pink Parade, Hippo Smiles and Tacos at Lucha Libre

It’s Frivolous Friday!

Thought I would share some of the fun I squeezed in this week (in between all my portrait sessions and retouching work.)

Yep, this happened #1:

Got photobombed by a flamingo!

I couldn’t resist a morning walk at the zoo to test out all my equipment after their Spa Vacation at the Canon Factory Center HERE is that story if you missed it last week.

My first stop was the flamingos….    I decided to take a quick selfie to send to send to Matt in Philadelphia just to say ‘neener neener we don’t have frigid weather’ (am I a mean mom, or what?)

Well, as I was framing it to have the whole enclosure in the background,  a flamingo walked right into my shot – how perfect was that?

And then it was time for the flamingo parade….

Also watched a flamingo walk on water!  (I think he was auditioning for a solo in the parade)

And after all that goofiness, I took some time to study all of them and plan some beautiful portraits.

I made this portrait by paying attention to where the light and shadows fell and waiting for the perfect moment of feather ruffle-age.

I also carefully placed my focus and depth of field to really accentuate his eye and his gorgeous feathers while letting the background go dark and blurry.

I wanted him to look soft and wispy and I think I succeeded….what do you think?

Yep, this happened #2:

The rest of my morning zoo walk was just as spectacular as the flamingos!

….got a smile from the hippo….

(Hard to see but he was resting his chin on a log  — because why support your own head if you don’t have to?)

I noticed that the Schmidt’s Red Tailed Monkey has a perfect heart on his nose….

Made eye contact with a jaguar gnawing on a morning treat…

And last, I checked out the plans for the new Children’s Zoo.
Did you know that the old Children’s Zoo closes tomorrow for demolition and re-building?
Well it will and it was the biggest reason I decided to visit the zoo this week…thought I’d stroll through to say goodbye and see if there was anything I wanted to photograph.
Well, there wasn’t.
I realized it’s old and rundown, a little creepy and definitely NOT kid-friendly.
It’s for sure not up to par with the rest of our amazing zoo!
So I say good riddance to the 61 year old children’s area and bring on the new!
And the new  $69 million plans look wonderful!
Here’s the model, but check out their website
 – they will even have a creek for kids to splash around in!
It opens in 2021

Yep, this happened #3:

Well after all that zoo time I was hungry.  (Pam hungry?  Surprise,  surprise you must be thinking….ha)

So we stopped for lunch at Lucha Libre in North Park

(This restaurant has been in the news and on Food Network so it’s been on my radar — finally I had the time to give it a try!)

And what a fun vibe – with pink walls, gold glitter seating and crazy photos on all the walls  – and you can sit at a table in the ring!

The food was delish too – we will definitely be back!
