Frivolous Friday: Trumpeting Over a Baby Elephant & Ooops!

Frivolous:  carefree and not serious, lighthearted, giddy

Guess what three things happened this week in between all my portrait sessions and retouching work???
Well…let me tell you….

Yep, this happened #1:

TWO WORDS:  BABY ELEPHANT!

As soon as I heard a baby elephant had been born at the Safari Park I started to plan my visit.

It took ten days until I could fit a couple hours into my schedule to get up there, but I did — and oh my goodness was it ever worth it!

His name is  “Umzula-zuli” (aka Zuli) and he was the largest calf ever born at the park weighing in at 270 pounds!

We spent about a half hour enjoying his antics ….

*And side note – the keeper mentioned that there were a few ‘auntie elephants’ who would follow him around trying to

be his babysitter.  (And the keeper said – mom appreciates this and will take them up on it!   So yay for Aunties!)

And here’s something else the keeper told us – when the newborn baby was first allowed out of the enclosure to meet the rest of the herd,

all the other elephants trumpeted with excitement and rushed over to touch him and caress him!

Is that the sweetest thing you’ve ever heard, or what?

She said the herd spent the entire first week of his life trumpeting and caressing and we saw it today too at ten days old!

Just like us humans I think – don’t you want to squeal and touch every little baby you see?   I know I do!

And baby got sleepy and wanted a little nap…how cute is that?

Yep, this happened #2:

While we were watching the baby, I happened to notice some adult elephants having a little cuddle in the background…awwww…..

Which turned into “DATING” as the keeper put it….

ahem….so we gave them some privacy….  😛

**But side note – maybe I’ll be up there in 22 months photographing THEIR baby – and yes, 22 months or 700 DAYS! is the gestation of an elephant!

And while we were giving them privacy, we checked out an elephant molar!

MUNCH on a grand scale for sure!

Yep, this happened #3:

And can I just mention that my “Baby Elephant Day” didn’t start off as awesome as it ended.

At :30am as I was about to put my steel cut oats in the microwave (this is my every-single-day-of-my-life-breakfast, by the way…yum-o!)

the oatmeal bowl jumped out of my hand and threw itself all over my kitchen.

And if that wasn’t bad enough,  after cleaning that up and making a new bowl of oatmeal,  I then spilled my morning coffee on my desk.

UGGG!

Well folks, sometimes this is what real life looks like…..am I right….?

But never fear – the baby elephant was the perfect tonic to an oopsie and bonus:  my kitchen and my desk are now sparkling clean!
