Frivolous Friday: A Momentous Day

Frivolous Friday!

Yep, this happened #1:

Just got home from a trip to celebrate a momentous event in the life of our family!!!!

Matt graduated from Yale University with his Master’s of Fine Arts Degree….!!!

[cue the marching band, fireworks and me jumping up and down!]

Commencement began with us joining 20,000 other parents to watch the whole-school ceremony (Hillary Clinton, a Yale alum, was a guest speaker.)

Matt was chosen to be the Student Marshal for the School of Drama, so he was honored to walk on stage to be presented the degrees for the entire school.
Then we headed over to the School of Drama’s Commencement for the individual awarding of degrees and special awards (yay, Matt was honored with an award for best thesis!)
….let’s just say I was – and AM – one proud mama!

Congrats to his whole class!

***And if you’d like a bit of background – there are ten different programs within the Yale School Of Drama:

Directing, Dramaturgy, Design, Playwriting, Acting, Technical Intern, Theatre Management, Stage Management, Sound Design, Directing

and the one Matt was in:   Technical Design and Production.

——

Yale’s Department of Technical Design and Production is the largest graduate program in the world devoted exclusively to technical production,

so we were over the moon he was even accepted into the program and now he’s graduated!!!

With his degree, Matt will be responsible for realizing the visions of the producer and the director within constraints of technical possibility.

This involves coordinating the operations of various production sub-disciplines (scenic, wardrobe, lighting, sound, projection, automation, video, pyrotechnics, stage management, etc.) of the presentation.

He will be the House Manager of a theatre:  he will be responsible for overseeing the creative leadership, budgets, safety, practices, vision, etc for each production.

The Mission Statement is pretty awesome:

Yale School of Drama will train and advance leaders to raise the standards of global professional practice in every theatrical discipline,

creating bold art that astonishes the mind, challenges the heart, and delights the senses.

[don’t you just love that?]

Yep, this happened #2:

Matt gave us a private tour of  Yale’s campus!

Did you know that Yale was founded in 1701 and is the third oldest university in the United States and is one of the eight Ivy League Schools….?

And let me tell you this….the architecture is straight out of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts!

And speaking of Hogwarts, Matt’s diploma is in Latin!

The best part of our campus stroll was visiting all the behind the scenes areas that Matt has spent so much time working in these past three years.

(Students are required to work 40+ hour weeks in the university’s four theatres in addition to their studies.)

We also got to see the work rooms where students create sets and projects.

Yep, this happened #3:

oh.  and I ate!  a lot of yummy things!   (You know how much I love EATING!)

We were invited to a Dessert Reception hosted by the Department Chair and Faculty,  a student BBQ,  a Graduate Luncheon for the entire School of Drama and their families,

enjoyed fun and an amazing dinner with a friend’s family,  gobbled up a lobster roll and crab cake for brunch at a sweet seaside  cafe, chugged down a bottle of Birch Beer (non alcoholic east coast soda – tastes like root beer/cream soda)

and on our last night,  we all crashed at our sweet little Air B&B apartment with a Hawaiian pizza from Matt’s favorite hole-in-the-wall pizza joint…YUM!!!
