Frivolous Friday: Torrey pines Sunset Seat, Not riding the Merry Go Round and Cutwater Spirits Restaurant

Frivolous:  carefree and not serious, lighthearted, giddy

Guess what three things happened this week in between all my portrait sessions and retouching work???
Well…let me tell you….

Yep, this happened #1:

I made a new friend on the cliffs above Torrey Pines Beach!

Have you noticed that there’s an eagle emerging out of a tree trunk on the bluff overlooking the ocean on the side of Camino Del Mar just north of Carmel Valley Road?

Well – here’s the story:

The City of Del Mar was in the process of removing a beetles-damaged Torrey Pine tree on Torrey Pines Reserve when a resident happened to be walking by

and approached the park crew and asked them to hold their saw while he called the city to pitch his idea about turning the stump into art.

They found Award-winning woodworking artist Tim Richards (also a Del Mar resident) and he transformed it from beetle-ridden trunk into a sea-facing throne guarded by a serene eagle.

Is that the most awesome story, or what???

Here’s the view that eagle enjoys every day:

Yep, this happened #2:

Had a BLAST not riding the merry go round!

I was at Balboa Park getting ready for a family portrait session.

Because I arrived early (as I ALWAYS do – that’s how I roll!) I strolled over to enjoy a peek at our beautiful historic Merry Go Round.

***Side note:  did you know the Carousel dates from 1910?

And it’s called a “menagerie” because it has more animals than just horses.  (The animals are original hand-carved European pieces of art with hand-painted murals surrounding the upper portion of the carousel.)

This carousel is one of the few in the world still offering the brass ring game for everyone taking the 5-minute ride.

In 1915, the carousel was displayed at the summer resort called Tent City, in Coronado, and then moved up Balboa Park around 1922.

And that reminded me of a beautiful Balboa Park Engagement Session I photographed a few years ago –

Diane and Greg stopped for a ride on the Carousel during their Engagement portrait session – how fun is THAT?

**and side note – part of what I LOVE about my life and photography is I’m treasuring up some amazing moments in my own heart.

I capture them for others, but they are also captured for ME!   (Someday when I’m old and gray rocking in my chair, I’ll have some amazing moments to think about….)

(So yes, when I walk by the carousel five years later, I remember them, the day we were together and their sweet love story!)

Yep, this happened #3:

Tried a new restaurant!  It’s in Mira Mesa and it’s called Cutwater Spirits.

The building is designed to look like a ship cutting through the water.  The restaurant has a hip vibe with couches, low tables and a friendly feel.

They are known for their adult beverages, but as a bonus, the food was really good!

What can I say:  I’m Feeling Blessed!
