Art of the Brick Lego Art at the Fleet Museum

The Art of the Brick is at the Fleet Museum in Balboa Park right now- it’s a collection more than 100 sculptures/Art pieces made from more than one million LEGO bricks!

It was named one of CNN’s Top Ten “Global Must-See Exhibitions,” and I couldn’t agree more.
The exhibit is 8 rooms of amazing art!
The first room features famous art work recreated in LEGO bricks:

Here’s a close up of Van Gogh’s Sky:

“Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1” (best known under its colloquial name Whistler’s Mother)
The figure is a 3-D Sculpture ….and the back wall is also made from LEGOS

(Note:  I am not made from LEGOS)

A swim, anyone?

Have to give you the caption for that piece:
Everlasting
Love lives forever.  It outlives youth and a flat stomach and a full head of hair.
And that’s what makes it beautiful.

The caption for this one is amazing too:

Disintegration
Beware the winds of life that nibble away at your sense of self.  Stay Strong

Torso
Sometimes life gets so busy and there is so much going on in your head that it would be
nice to be able to lift it off, empty out all the clutter and re-place ready to take on the day.

*I wish I could share every piece of art and it’s description but can’t—you really need to make sure you take the time to go and read what the artist wrote about each of his works….

20 Feet long using 80,000 LEGO blocks!

One room of the exhibit features an amazing set of photographs:
The Lego artist and a photographer met on location and placed a piece of LEGO art in a scene
and then photographing the entire landscape.
(In the train station photo, the train track is made from LEGOS)

Same technique for the red dress in front of the old movie house….

Life-sized surfer hangin’ ten!

We also learned that people donate LEGOS to the artist
and he uses them in his art as a rainbow jumble of color.
So the surfboard and these tree Hug Men were made from donated Legos.
Needless to say, we had a great time and recommend you go check it out –
remember it closes on January 29th!
