The planets aligned earlier this month and our schedules allowed a family vacation in Cancun!
Matt flew in from Connecticut and we arrived from San Diego for a week
of warmth and relaxation.
We booked an all-inclusive hotel
(First photo shows hotel from the water and second photo is the view from our hotel room.)
They have seven restaurants within our resort, so we ate somewhere different each day –
but always started the day with a three course
breakfast on the sand! Yum!
The water was crystal clear and soooooooooo warm!
One of the highlights of our week was our guided tour of Chichén Itzá.
A mayan city that has been named as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
The temple has 365 steps—one for each day of the year.
The city’s only permanent water source was a series of sinkhole wells. Spanish records report that young female victims were thrown into the largest of these, live, as sacrifices to the Maya rain god thought to live in its depths. Archaeologists have since found their bones, as well as the jewelry and other precious objects they wore in their final hours.
And even knowing that, we jumped in!
(Called a Cenote -underground sinkhole)
But it wasn’t all history….we also had fun at our hotel!
The only other time we left the hotel grounds was on a snorkel cruise….
We got to see the Museum of Art’s newest installation – sculptures placed
under the sea all ready for new coral reefs….
We all had such a wonderful time I think we might meet in Cancun next spring break
to do it all again!
