The Rule of Thirds

Perhaps the first principle photographers are taught about composition is the ‘Rule of Thirds‘.

What is the Rule of Thirds?

First imagine a tic tac toe style grid on your photo:

Now, do you see the 4 spots where the lines intersect?

Those are the magic spots that the Rule of Thirds addresses–put your main object on one of those 4 spots!

Photographs composed according to the rule of thirds tend to appear calm and balanced.

I will say that this rule should not apply to every photo, so ignoring it doesn’t mean your images are bad.

Remember rules are made to be broken!

“One applies the rule when it will help the composition.
One does not apply the rule when it will not help the composition.
Experience – observing the works of others and limitations in the field will help you make this choice.”
