View of the Dunes

Ever heard of blowing sand dunes?

Well they really do blow- whole mountains of sand can move in just a few days!

The sand dunes over-taking this street are just outside Palm Springs, California (about a 2 hour drive from San Diego.)

We were in town to spend a few days with the grandfolks. (Just a few days, mind you — the desert temps during the summer are usually in the 110-115 degree range…..can you say HOT
????)

Their community is surrounded by open desert and the accumulation of windblown sand is interesting and beautiful!

How do you stop a moving sand dune? In some places people simply drench the sand with oil–(YIKES!)

In Palm Springs they use sand fences, like snow fences, but as you can see there are no guarantees…..
