What can you make with some paper and balsa wood?
How about a boat?
Students in our high school physics class are given an end of the year assignment:
Take some mural paper and a few sticks of balsa wood and build a boat.
But–hold on a minute—
Not just ANY boat, one that will transport someone across the pool!
(Yes, transport someone across the pool in a PAPER boat!)
The kids work in groups to plan, calculate, build and paint their boats in preparation for race day.
Then each team launches their boat….
Step two is to carefully lift your ‘sailor’ into the boat …
Step three is to carefully and quickly get to the finish line!
Some boats make it all the way across the pool….
Some never leave the starting gate….
Three boats made it across! Tune in tomorrow and I’ll show you what they did after that to determine KING OF THE FLEET!
