Mission San Luis Rey
California has 21 missions. This beautiful building is Mission San Luis Rey de Francia- it was founded in 1798.
(Don’t we all hope we look that good when we are 211 years old?)
Since 1798, these peaceful and tranquil grounds have been entrusted to the loving care of the Franciscan Friars.
We were on the mission grounds to see the Indian Pow wow, so we didn’t really have time to visit the mission, but we did take a few minutes to walk through the beautiful grounds and peak at the cemetery.
Many of San Diego’s leading pioneers and families are buried here.
“ESPADAÑA -A wall which seems to be a continuation upward of the façade but which actually projects above the roofline. It has the visual effect of heightening the building. An espadaña is roughly triangular in shape but with graceful curved or scalloped edges. Openings for bells make an espadaña kind of a campanario.” California Mission Studies Text
