Valley of the Temples
Now that the American Idol excitment is over, (Make sure you look at yesterday’s blog if you missed that!) we are back in Hawaii for just a few more days…..
There are still more things I just have to show you….!
I HAVE to show you the Valley of the Temples! (One of the photos I took here is in my top 10 favorites of the whole trip! Any guesses?)
Can you believe this entire Byodo-in Temple was built entirely without the use of nails? It is a replica of a 900 year old Uji Temple in Japan. (Doesn’t it look like it could be a miniature? Trust me, it’s full size and they let you walk through it~!)
The Buddah is thought to be the largest carved since ancient times.
The Bell House contains a 5 foot high, three ton brass bell called bon-sho.
Visitors were invited to strike the bell with the soft wooden log to cleanse the mind of evil and temptation.
The temple was located inside a cemetary. That cemetary was interesting to us as well. According to Hawaiian tradition people leave food, drink and flowers on the graves of their loved ones!
“Show me your cemeteries, and I will tell you what kind of people you have.”
